Smithwick Strata Services was founded in 1998 by Ida Smithwick, a past President of the Strata Titles Institute of Western Australia. In 2009, Henry Vurens van Es, coming from a background in the service industry in construction and business development, acquired ownership of Smithwick after a two year transition.
How we started and where we are going
As a result of the acquisition, the business model was modified from the traditional approach to Strata Management to a more proactive and focused business model employing experienced staff within the specialist areas of Strata Management (Maintenance / Facilities Management, Accounting, Meetings Facilitation, and Compliance). Since the change of ownership and business model, Smithwick has grown the portfolio by over 250% and the portfolio as well as the team of staff continues to grow.

HENRY VURENS VAN ES
Henry has 10 years first hand experience in Strata Management and over 25 years of working with the strata management industry.
Previously Henry was involved in the construction industry when in 2000 Henry started his own business, Perth Door Services which grew to become National Door Services with branches Australia wide. During this time Henry built strong relationships with the Strata Industry. In 2006 Henry sold that business to international company Assa Abloy.
In 2008 Henry decided to look for a new challenge and felt that the growing strata Industry was what he was looking for. Henry is passionate about building long term relationships with his customers, staff and suppliers.
Outside of Strata Henry likes anything with two wheels and going fast. Henry is also an avid traveller and enjoys spending time with his wife.
David commenced with Smithwick Strata Services as the General Manager in 2017. Prior to working at Smithwick, David had 10 years’ experience within the banking industry, most recently with Macquarie Bank in the Property Services Team. The role at Macquarie Bank provided David with the opportunity to work closely with Real Estate and Strata Management clients. David’s strong financial management background will assist Smithwick’s clients with accurate budgeting and cash flow management.
David holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Finance) and a Master of Accounting. David’s long-term goal is to use his qualification and experience to attain his CPA .
Outside of work David enjoys spending time with his young family at home and at the beach. He also likes to keep fit by swimming, cycling and recently took up Muay Thai.
Fiona has been working as a contractor to Smithwick Strata Services since 2013 and has been working within the Strata and Property industry for over ten years.
Fiona’s role within Smithwick is that of a Strata Manager to a portfolio of Survey Strata’s that Smithwick Strata Services manages. Fiona also assists with the coordination of Annual General Meetings.
Outside of strata, Fiona enjoys spending her time with her grandchildren and in the garden, whilst also keeping up her creative skills with sewing and crafts. Fiona also finds time to produce delicious baked goods!
Marianne is new to the Strata Industry commencing at Smithwick in 2016. Prior to Smithwick, Marianne most recently worked for a lengthy period in the public service within the industrial relations area working in a small group with the responsibility for administration of the office.
Marianne’s role within Smithwick is to assist the efficiency of all roles and works closely with the Maintenance Manager to provide a high level service for Smithwick clients.
Marianne’s hobbies outside of work include reading, walking and cooking / baking treats.
Debbie has been with Smithwick Strata since 2009 and has several decades of experience in senior accounting roles. Debbie primarily operates in a senior accounting role applying strict professional governance over a large number of strata businesses for Smithwick Strata Services.
Debbie’s expertise includes high level accounting responsibilities including ad-hoc project duties, budgeting and month end responsibilities.
Debbie is an accomplished professional operating within a successful Strata team where a high level of customer service is paramount. Debbie enjoys getting out doors, hiking, four wheel driving and travelling overseas and experiencing other cultures.
Alisha joined Smithwick in May 2020. After working as the Executive Operations Manager across a component of nine dental practices for more than 20 years, Alisha decided it was time for a change. Alisha is keen to learn more about the strata industry and to put her knowledge she has obtained from completing ( studying) a Bachelor of Business degree specialising in Law in Business and Human Resources to practice.
Alisha brings to Smithwick a great deal of experience in business operation. Alisha’s strengths are strong communication and relationship management, as well as being structured and methodical.
Outside of work, you can find Alisha socialising with family and friends enjoying various cuisines. When the sun is shining Alisha loves the beach with an active family involved in outdoor activities.
Kirsty completed a degree in Property Development and Valuation at Napier University Edinburgh, Scotland before following her heart to Australia where she spent the first 3 years living in Broome before moving to Perth, a city which she has called home for the last 4 years.
Kirsty has also spent time working in the hospitality industry which played on her strengths as a people person. Not afraid of hard work, Kirsty’s strengths include engaging with people on all levels and being a good communicator.
Outside of work Kirsty enjoys keeping herself fit and active and making the most of the “great outdoors”… when the suns shining, it’s beach time!
Catching up with family & friends, near and far, is also very important to her.
Pat is our new Strata and Maintenance Manager who will be working closely with Neil Flynn and John Woolley.
Pat brings with her a wealth of strata experience, having worked within the industry for over 15 years. She commenced her career in Darwin, with the Territory’s largest strata management company. She is a qualified strata manager and has experience in maintenance, administration and accounts. Pat has been in Perth since 2009 and has developed a reputation within the industry for her keen eye for detail and her knowledge and understanding of strata plans.
Outside of strata, Pat is a dedicated mother and grandmother who enjoys keeping fit and travelling. She will be a valuable addition to Smithwick and looks forward to providing our clients with an excellent level of service.
Alissa joined the Smithwick team in March 2018 as the Client Liaison Manager.
Alissa is an experienced law firm property conveyancer with extensive real estate industry experience. This experience assists our clients with interpretation of by-laws and strata plans. Alissa is currently mid-way through a Bachelor of Laws at ECU and keen to pursue her interest in property and contract law once qualified.
Outside of work, Alissa enjoys spending time with her family, sampling local food & wine with friends and travelling.
Smithwick is committed to succession planning and developing the next generation of strata managers. To this end we have employed 23 year old Ruby Solis, who will commence employment with the company as an Administration Assistant.
Ruby is keen to learn more about the strata industry and developing a greater understanding of our business practices.
Having worked in the hospitality industry for six years, she is well-versed in customer service and looks forward to working with our clients. Ruby has many interests outside strata.
She is a keen roller hockey player and loves to travel. Ruby will join Smithwick on 20 December 2018.
Heather has over 35 years’ experience in Strata Management and is a founding member of Strata Titles Institute of WA, later to become Strata Community Association (member # 13) and serves on the Professional Standard’s Committee. Heather has a Certificate IV in Property Services and is a qualified Level 2 Certified Strata Community Manager.
Previously, Heather owned and ran her own Strata Management business providing a responsive and personal approach for residential, short stay & commercial strata schemes. Heather’s curiosity to explore and understand building systems has given her a practical knowledge in HVAC, lifts, hydraulics, fire and general maintenance. Heather is passionate about strengthening strata communities, working with owners for the betterment of their building, valuing the long term relationships she has built within the industry.
Outside work, Heather enjoys dinners with family & friends along with keeping fit through yoga, cycling and pilates.
Nate joined the Maintenance team in June 2019. He is the first point of call for any maintenance issues and is looking forward to working closely with our clients and contractors.
With experience in fleet maintenance and property maintenance, Nate is keen to learn the ropes of strata maintenance and the strata industry.
Nate has a great understanding of information system technology that gives Smithwick the inherent advantage of generation Z skills.
Nate is a talented musician and plays in local band, ‘Yokine’. He enjoys getting out in the garden in his spare time.
